A visit to the US Consulate (More information about Dual Nationality, etc.)

March 7th, 2008 · No Comments

Recently, I visited the US Consulate here in Amsterdam hoping to get answers to my long piled up questions. And boy, I was glad I went there. The person I spoke to was very helpful and accommodating. I think he’s one of the consuls because he was the one who signed my notarized document last time. Yes I know, a lot of us from other countries may not have the same warm fuzzy feeling when going to the US embassy but this time I did. Anyways, that day there were also no lines at all and the security guard was extra friendly. I think it was probably due to the new appointment system they just introduced recently or maybe they actually know that I am celebrating my birthday this week?Question 1: I had changed my name in my passport due to marriage last year. I thought it was a bad decision as now most of my legal documents and bank accounts are still in my old name and this gives me a headache. Can I change it back to my old name?
After consulting his colleagues he offered me a nice solution. They could actually add extra information at the back of my passport that shows my other name. I could choose to keep my current name and include my former name at the back or have it the other way around.
.
Question 2: I showed him a printout of Republic Act No. 9225 which allows me to retain my Philippine citizenship and also showed him the application form for a new passport which I mentioned in my other article about Dual Nationality and he said that it is no problem and the US government do not care about your other nationality and I do not need to make a formal statement about it when I renew my passport. I made it clear to him that I want to make sure I keep my US Citizenship. So that clears up everything then.

Question 3: How can I vote ? He asked me where I was naturalized and gave me all the forms for that state and additional information. Everything I need to be able to vote. The only question left for me to answer now is who to vote for. I still need to read up more about that ;-)
